After a tense back-and-forth, the San Diego City Council voted to override some of Mayor Todd Gloria's line-item vetoes, passing a revised $6 billion budget.
A second attempt to restore funding for the city's lakes, brush management , and place the city's Office of Race and Equity under the purview of the city's Independent Budget Analyst, passed 6-3 in a contentious San Diego City Council meeting. Following Mayor Todd Gloria 's line-item vetoes of several measures included in the council-approved $6 billion 2025-26 municipal budget, the council voted to override some of his decisions on Monday.
Gloria originally maintained his veto, arguing that the council's revisions would lead to deeper cuts and an unsustainable budget. He urged the council to sustain his vetoes for the sake of the city's financial stability. Council members, however, contested Gloria's position, arguing that they made responsible budgetary decisions to restore critical services such as library and recreation center hours. City Councilman Henry Foster III, the council's budget committee chair, expressed frustration with the mayor's vetoes, stating that they undermined the council's efforts and portrayed them recklessly. The contentious budget season was marked by clashes between council members and the mayor's office, which publicly criticized the council's budgetary assumptions. Several council members voiced their commitment to long-term financial stability and progress, preferring a 'growing our way to a better future' approach over 'slashing and burning' budget cuts. Councilman Sean Elo- Rivera, a staunch critic of the mayor's proposed cuts, emphasized the importance of investing in the city's future. A previous motion to entirely override Gloria's vetoes failed 4-5, paving the way for the successful partial override that addressed concerns regarding lake funding, brush management, and the Office of Race and Equity's oversight. Mayor Gloria, in a statement after the vote, expressed concern over the potential consequences of the council's actions, warning of midyear cuts and broken promises. He maintained his belief in fiscal responsibility and emphasized the need for a transparent and sustainable budgeting approach
