Originally a wrestler and distance runner, Pettit became an all-around track and field standout by his senior year, ‘yes coach’-ing his way into the school’s record books. “Every time we put him up to , he succeeds,” his high school track and field coach, Jake Moe, said.
“And I’ve got you signed up for 110-meter hurdles too in Homer, by the way,” he told Pettit at his collegiate signing. “He’s never done that before either. We are always pushing him and he always says, ‘yes, coach’ and responds correctly.”
In front of a gymnasium full of friends, family and teammates, Pettit put pen to paper to compete in multi-events at Hope College in Holland, Michigan next year. “I was very surprised with how many people came today and my biggest supporters, my parents and my coaches,” Pettit said after making his collegiate commitment official. “I just loved it and my past teachers coming as well was such a big surprise and just a present really, it was awesome.”
Pettit is aiming to compete in the decathlon at Hope and holds the school record in pentathlon points, secured earlier this season at the Big C Relays. He has lined up in hurdle and sprint events and leaped over the bar in high jump, but specialized in throwing events, particularly shotput and discus, a versatile skillset he will bring to the Division III college. “It’s a Christian college, and I grew up going to this Christian school here, and so I just connected with it instantly,” Pettit said of his collegiate selection. “The people are so nice there and it’s just a place that I believe I could totally grow from both athletically and as a person and continue to pursue my goals.”
Pettit will complete his senior year of track and field with Mountain City before heading to Hope College, where he plans to study exercise science. “You have to reach out yourself, for sure,” he said of being recruited out of Alaska. “It’s definitely a process where you are the driver in it and the coaches do play a big part, but they are responding to it. When it comes to the athletics...you can definitely do whatever you want. There’s so many things that you could do, like throw and run, it’s the weirdest combo, but I believe you can do it. If I can do it, you can do it.”
