Uncompetitive pay, the pandemic and a lack of awareness about the profession have played a role in the shortage of court reporters in Bexar County.

Some courtroom proceedings in Bexar County are being postponed because there are no court reporters on hand, a problem that's straining courts across the country. Uncompetitive pay and too few people making a career of court reporting have led to a shortage that's worsened in the last year in Bexar County and across the country. Court proceedings can't happen without court reporters.

Backlog at Bexar County District Attorney's Office grows as thousands wait for their day in court Ana Amici, general administrative counsel for the criminal district court administration, said every court has its own court reporter. There are also “swing” court reporters who work among the courts, as well as a list of freelance court reporters whom they routinely call. But on any given day, multiple court reporters take personal time off or take off for emergency situations, Amici said.
