Virginia Governor Spanberger has amended over 180 bills, drawing criticism from Democrats. Key amendments include changes to a bill banning ICE arrests at sensitive locations, a bill concerning the transfer of incarcerated undocumented immigrants to ICE, and a delay in the start of legal marijuana retail sales. Critics argue the governor's actions contradict her campaign promises and expand criminal penalties, while supporters believe some changes are improvements.
This follows the governor’s amendments to more than 180 of the bills Democrats sent to her desk, ranging from Democratic Sen. Saddam Salim said he is disappointed Spanberger amended his bill that aims to ban ICE from making immigration arrests at local courthouses, hospitals, schools, polling locations, and other areas.
Spanberger added a line in the bill that would help protect ICE officers from lawsuits if they violate the law and make arrests at these locations anyway.
The Democratic controlled General Assembly also sent Spanberger a bill that would allow state prisons and local jails to transfer custody of illegal immigrant adults to ICE only if they have been convicted of violent felonies. Spanberger amended the bill to allow transfer to ICE even if they have not been convicted.
thinks local governments should be able to choose if they work with ICE in the field, but he’s glad Spanberger amended the bill to at least allow jails to transfer most illegal immigrants to ICE. “I think it's an improvement,” said Chapman. “I'm not so sure it answers all the questions that we need to have answered there. I think it's a step in the right direction, but it's not as much as we would have liked. But we'll have to see how that works out.”
Spanberger also amended a bill to delay the start of marijuana retail sales by six months. The governor said this delay will help hold vape shops that target kids accountable.
The two Democratic authors of the bills slammed Spanberger’s amendments, saying the governor’s changes expand criminal penalties for cannabis related offenses.“The problem she has to correct is her policies don’t match her rhetoric from the campaign trail. Her issue is credibility,” said Lucas, referring to Spanberger’s plummeting approval rating.
