Two British men faced legal penalties, including a prison sentence, after attacking staff and customers at a cocktail bar in Mallorca following a dispute over alcohol service.
The tranquility of a summer night in Palmanova, Mallorca , was shattered on June 22, 2024, when a routine refusal of alcohol service escalated into a scene of extreme violence at the Iroko Mallorca cocktail bar.
Two British tourists, identified as twenty-four-year-old Tommy Colm Witty and thirty-three-year-old Alexander Lee Anderson, became violently aggressive after a female waitress determined they had had enough to drink and refused to serve them further. The situation deteriorated rapidly as the men directed obscene language and inappropriate gestures toward the employee. This verbal assault quickly turned physical, with the two men pushing the waitress with such force that she collapsed onto the floor.
The fall resulted in a significant head injury as she struck the ground, and she further suffered deep lacerations to her leg caused by broken glass scattered across the floor. The chaos did not end with the attack on the waitress. As a colleague and a customer attempted to intervene and protect the female staff member, they were also targeted in a brutal fashion.
One of the men, believed to be a co-worker of the waitress, was struck violently on the back of his head with a piece of glass. Simultaneously, another patron tried to shield himself from the aggression, but Witty launched a glass at him. The object shattered upon impact with the victim's arm, leaving him with painful wounds to both his neck and hand.
The scene was described as harrowing, with footage capturing the assault in the middle of the packed establishment. The Civil Guard, who were conducting routine security patrols as part of summer reinforcements, were alerted to the mass fight and arrived to find a man covered in blood brandishing a jagged, broken bottle. Officers acted swiftly to neutralize the threat and disarm Witty, ensuring that no further injuries occurred.
Following the incident, the victims were rushed to the Son Espases Hospital in Palma, where they required urgent medical attention, including numerous stitches for deep wounds in their neck, head, arms, and legs. The severity of the injuries and the areas affected led the Spanish authorities to initially arrest Witty and Anderson on suspicion of attempted homicide, alongside charges of wounding and causing serious public disorder.
However, the legal proceedings at the Provincial Court of Palma eventually shifted toward a plea bargain. As part of this agreement, both men pleaded guilty to three counts of wounding. Tommy Colm Witty, who had been held on remand since the attack, was sentenced to two years in prison. Alexander Lee Anderson received a fine of seven hundred and twenty euros.
Furthermore, both men agreed to pay a four-figure compensation settlement to the victims to acknowledge the trauma and physical harm caused. The court noted that the cash for these payments was handed over prior to the hearing, ensuring the victims received immediate financial restitution for their medical recovery and time taken off work
