SAN DIEGO - Three hundred fifty female high school athletes representing eleven schools in the Grossmont Unified High School District participated in the first-ever student-athlete leadership seminar. The event aimed to empower young women to become leaders, not only in athletics but also in academics and their communities.
While girls are making impressive strides in various sports, including basketball, wrestling, flag football, and softball, participation rates remain lower than boys, at 60% to 40%. The seminar sought to bridge this gap and inspire the next generation of female leaders. The girls were treated to an inspiring keynote speech from Afsoon Johnston, a pioneering figure in the world of wrestling. Johnston became the first woman to compete collegiately on a men's wrestling team and was a member of the inaugural United States Women's World Wrestling team. She shared her experiences of overcoming obstacles and achieving success on the world stage, winning a historic first-ever world medal for the United States. Johnston's message resonated with the young athletes, encouraging them to persevere and strive for their goals.The increasing number of girls' sports teams in high schools and the growing presence of women in leadership roles within athletics, such as athletic directors, were evident at the seminar.
