Russia's LazerBuzz says its laser counter-drone system has now destroyed a target at about 0.93 miles, in a new Project Posokh test.

LazerBuzz had extended the engagement range of its laser counter-drone system to 1.5 kilometers , as recently reported by Russia n state outlet TASS. According to TASS, LazerBuzz said the system destroyed an aircraft-type drone at a distance of 1,500 meters . The company described this as part of an ongoing modernization effort rather than a final configuration. That detail suggests further upgrades are still in progress.

The claim itself is notable, but it comes from company-originated reporting. There is no independent test data or official military evaluation publicly available. TASS also reported that the system uses focused ytterbium laser technology to physically damage drones. This indicates a hard-kill approach that burns and destroys components instead of relying on electronic disruption.

Progress builds on earlier testsThe reported 0.93-mile engagement marks a visible increase from earlier milestones. In December 2025, TASS said the system engaged an FPV drone at a distance of 1 kilometer, or about 0.62 miles. That test showed how the laser damaged internal components, including the battery, until the drone caught fire and crashed.

Later, on March 27, 2026, TASS reported that the system had been integrated with radar. This step was aimed at countering FPV drone maneuvering through a detect, track, and engage process. Company representatives said, “Unmanned aerial vehicles flying at a speed of 130-140 km/h were engaged at a range of about one kilometer .”

Taken together, these updates suggest the program is evolving beyond a standalone laser into a broader counter-drone system with sensors and tracking support.

Technical limits still shape performanceDespite the reported progress, the 1.5-kilometer result should be interpreted carefully. A single successful intercept does not prove consistent battlefield performance. Laser weapons depend on several variables, including beam quality, tracking accuracy, dwell time, and atmospheric conditions.

Because the system uses heat to destroy targets, it must keep energy focused on a specific point long enough to burn through critical parts. This can be challenging against fast and agile drones, especially in poor weather or complex terrain.The addition of radar is therefore a key development. Detecting and tracking small, low-flying drones is often harder than generating the laser energy itself. TASS also noted that LazerBuzz is working on an acoustic sensor subsystem. If successful, this could improve early warning and help detect drones in low-visibility conditions.

Gaps remain in real-world validationImportant technical details are still missing from public reports. There is no information on output power, cooling systems, engagement timelines, or performance in rain, fog, or dust. These factors are critical in determining whether the system can move from testing to reliable field use.

Earlier reports also mentioned faster engagement times. One update in September 2025 suggested drones could be destroyed in about three seconds. A November report referred to automatic engagements in as little as half a second. If confirmed, these speeds could be as important as range in real combat scenarios.

The reported 0.93-mile intercept likely reflects steady progress rather than a major breakthrough. It shows improvements in tracking, system integration, and beam control. However, it does not yet confirm consistent effectiveness against a wide range of drone threats.
