Houston City Council granted five buildings historic landmark status using a key preservation tool designed to protect local culture.

Houston City Council on Wednesday granted five local buildings historic landmark status – a key preservation tool designed to ensure that pieces of Houston’s history are not lost to careless alterations or demolitions. Two of them—the Frank A. Watts House at 2529 Stanmore Drive and the Menil House at 3363 San Felipe Street —are now recognized as landmarks, meaning any redesign or maintenance must comply with additional regulations under the city’s Historic Preservation Ordinance .

The mayor wants to fight Houston gentrification with conservation districts. Critics say it won't work. The other three structures—the Alexander Z. and Julia C. Hester House at 1703 West Street, Concord Missionary Baptist Church at 7506 North Main Street and the Knapp Chevrolet Building at 1230 Houston Avenue—received the designation of protected landmarks, which offers a higher level of protection that provides significant safeguards against demolition and alterations.

Exxon Mobil has deep roots in Houston area Mayor John Whitmire previously raised concerns about the Humble-Exxon Building’s designation. He noted that the building does not appear to have as much historical significance as the other proposed landmarks and that the status could restrict future commercial opportunities at a “viable business structure in the central part of Houston.

Over the decades, it has also served as a repair shop, industrial print shop and a comedy improvisation theater called Station Theater. An art gallery currently occupies the space.

Watts House The two-story single-family home was designed in 1934 by Cameron Fairchild, an architect known for his eclectic residential designs primarily in River Oaks. The house features a wood frame with brick veneer and Colonial Revival details, along with a two-story garage that includes living quarters. It is located on a horseshoe-shaped court alongside five other residences.
