CLEVELAND, Ohio - The city of Cleveland’s Department of Development plans to partner with the Cleveland Metropolitan School District and Cleveland City Council to redevelop four former school properties on Friday.

The city of Cleveland’s Department of Development plans to partner with the Cleveland Metropolitan School District and Cleveland City Council to redevelop four former school properties on Friday. To begin the repurposing, the city and its partners are seeking qualifications from professional development teams before beginning to restore properties belonging to Audubon Middle School, Mount Auburn Elementary School, Central High School and Empire Junior High School.

The request for qualifications, the Landmark School Sites Redevelopment Request for Qualifications , seeks to preserve and reactivate historic buildings for local communities, according to a press release from the city.

“We want to build on the development momentum taking place on Cleveland’s east side by transforming the Audubon, Mount Auburn, Central, and Empire school buildings into lasting neighborhood assets,” Joevrose Bourdeau Small, director of economic development for the city of Cleveland, said. “This RFQ is an opportunity to return these locally designated landmark buildings to productive use while strengthening the surrounding communities.

” The four properties for this project are located near the east side neighborhoods of Mount Pleasant, Kinsman, Central and Glenville. All of the former school buildings have also received landmark designation.

“This opportunity continues to expand the list of public-private partnerships created by the city and CMSD to place former school sites and buildings back into productive use,” Michele Pomerantz, Mayor Bibb’s chief of education, said. “These projects support neighborhood revitalization, preserve our rich history, and reflect our broader commitment to reimagining buildings in ways that benefit residents and communities. ” The press release said that qualification acceptance began Wednesday and will continue until June 10.
