Mayor Zohran Mamdani unveils plans for city-operated grocery stores across New York City, starting with a location at La Marqueta in East Harlem. The initiative aims to address rising food prices and make essential groceries more affordable for all residents, with stores expected to be open by the end of 2029.
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani visited La Marqueta in East Harlem on Tuesday to further elaborate on his ambitious plans for city-operated grocery stores . This visit followed his weekend announcement revealing La Marqueta as the inaugural location for the first of five city-run grocery stores , with one planned for each borough across the city. Mayor Mamdani highlighted the historical significance of La Marqueta itself, originally established 92 years ago by Fiorello LaGuardia as an innovative initiative. He framed the current project as a continuation of this legacy, stating that New York City must embrace a new experiment. Just as LaGuardia leveraged governmental resources to address the challenges of the Great Depression, Mamdani emphasized the city's commitment to using government intervention to combat rising grocery prices and the unaffordability of essential food items.
The mayor presented alarming statistics underscoring the severity of the issue, revealing that grocery prices in New York City have surged by almost 66% between 2013 and 2023. Deputy Mayor for Economic Justice Julie Su added that a staggering sixty-two percent of New Yorkers are unable to afford the true cost of living in the city, encompassing not just luxuries but fundamental necessities like housing, childcare, medication, and food. She emphasized that this isn't an isolated problem for any particular community, nor is it inevitable. It signifies a failure of policy. Mamdani reinforced this sentiment by stating that, in this new era, the government will actively intervene to ensure affordability when residents are priced out of their essential groceries. The Mayor also noted that approximately 65,000 New Yorkers reside within a ten-minute walking distance of La Marqueta, highlighting the potential impact of the store on a significant segment of the population.
The plan for these city-run grocery stores is multifaceted. The city will subsidize a core selection of essential staples. A private operator will manage the day-to-day operations of each store, but they will be held accountable to the stringent standards set by the city. These standards will mandate that essential items, like bread and eggs, be available at significantly reduced prices. Mayor Mamdani stated that grocery shopping will no longer be an unsolvable equation. Furthermore, the city-run stores will intentionally exclude tobacco products and lottery tickets, items that are often major revenue drivers for bodega owners. The Mayor reiterated that the intention is to establish a distinct price difference that is easily recognizable by shoppers. The initiative extends beyond affordability and addresses the quality of available food. Manhattan Borough President Brad Hoylman-Sigal emphasized that all residents should have access to high-quality food regardless of their location within the borough, and access to quality food should not be segregated throughout the city. The city-run store at La Marqueta is planned to be a brand new establishment, with a projected opening date in 2029. The remaining stores may utilize existing spaces, with all five stores slated to be operational by the end of 2029
