He was apprehended at a Smith's store in Orem after staff reported suspicious activity related to out-of-state customer orders.
An Orem man was accused of illegally using another person's credit card in a money laundering scheme involving Kroger's loyalty rewards memberships. William Andres Bernal Sosa, 38, was booked in the Utah County Jail on Monday.
He faces felony charges of money laundering and unlawful acquisition of a financial card, as well as misdemeanor charges of retail theft and use of a fraudulent financial card. The charge was made in Orem using her credit card linked to her Kroger rewards membership. Staff confronted Sosa, who reportedly told them he was picking up for "Ian Gutierrez." Staff told police they had asked him to leave the store, but he later tried to pick up another order. When officers spoke to Sosa, he identified himself through his state ID. He allegedly told investigators he was not aware of the situation and that he was at the grocery store to pick up his own order. Investigators, however, said he was unable to provide an order number. Sosa was taken into custody and transported to the Utah County Jail, where he allegedly stated that he was working for someone else - a man whose name he did not know. According to court documents, the man and Sosa would communicate through a messaging app, and Sosa would be paid in cash for each order. When Sosa pulled up the messaging app, investigators said a foreign number appeared, but the messages were gone. Sosa allegedly lied, claiming his wife had deleted the messages, but later admitted to the lie.
