What started as a student idea at Alabama State University turned into a high-level pitch opportunity at Apple’s campus in Austin, Texas.

) - What began as a student idea at Alabama State University turned into a major pitch opportunity at Apple’s campus in Austin. ASU juniors Chiemerie Onyeanusi and Osasenaga Obaseki, members of Hornets in Tech, competed in the Propel pitch competition, where HBCU students presented ideas built with Apple technology.

Their team pitched Kineo, an app concept designed to support people dealing with chronic musculoskeletal pain by tailoring exercise plans to a user’s condition, daily health data, sleep, baseline activity, and how much movement they can handle on a given day. The students said the goal is not to replace doctors or physical therapists, but to help fill the gap many patients face between appointments as recovery changes day to day.

“If you slept very poorly that day, it takes that into consideration,” they said. “Maybe you can’t handle as much of the exercise that the physical therapist recommended. ” Obaseki said the project is rooted in his own experience living with chronic pain, and that one of the hardest parts is how often it’s unseen by others. A person may look fine on the outside, he said, while still dealing with serious discomfort.

The students said an app like Kineo could make following care plans feel less overwhelming by scaling exercises up or down based on how someone feels. They also said the problem is bigger than one person, pointing to how chronic musculoskeletal pain could grow as more people spend long hours in sedentary, screen-heavy routines. Onyeanusi said Kineo is also about confidence and consistency, helping patients feel they’re moving safely and staying on track.

While the app isn’t available yet, the students said they’ve built a concept showing how it would look and work, but a full version would likely require access to clinical data and a partnership with a physical therapy clinic. The Austin trip, they said, was still a major step that gave them a chance to meet Apple professionals and connect with other HBCU students.

They also credited Alabama State for helping make the opportunity possible, calling the school a “partner school” in the competition. As international students from Nigeria on scholarship, they said the experience helped reinforce that they belong in high-level innovation spaces. The broader team included Oluwakanyinsola Erinle and Emmanuel Iheyinwa, with support from advisor Silkee Williams.

Now, Onyeanusi and Obaseki say they want to keep building and eventually release Kineo to the publicwhile also helping put ASU on the map in the tech world.
