A 6-year-old Alaska student is competing for the title of America’s Favorite Student in a nationwide competition.
ANCHORAGE , Alaska - A 6-year-old Alaska student is competing for the title of America’s Favorite Student in a nationwide competition. Dax Leonard, a kindergartener at Birchwood ABC in Chugiak , entered the competition after multiple people suggested it to his mother, Sydney Leonard.
“I had three different people send links to me being like, ‘hey, do you think you think we should put Dax in this? ’” she said.
“I’ve been first place since it started,” Dax said. While only a kindergartener, Sydney said her son has an incredible grasp on reading, math, and science. Dax said he especially enjoys math. , the competition sorts students into different groups, where friends and families vote to see who ranks at the top spot.
Each week, the threshold to continue grows smaller, before the top student from each group is sent to the quarterfinals.
“He was in second place for like an hour or two in the middle of the night last night, but that was about it. ”If he wins, Dax will receive a trip to a science camp in California, a $20,000 cash prize, an article in Reader’s Digest and a meeting with Bill Nye the Science Guy.
Dax and his mother have different ideas about how to use the cash prize, with Sydney staying firm that most of the money will be saved for college.
“It would go toward a couple like STEM camps over different summers and then put most of it into just a savings account to wait for college,” she said. “Even way out here in the middle of nowhere, we got some incredibly brilliant kids up here in Alaska,” said Sydney.
