ANCHORAGE, Alaska - A widely celebrated holiday for a major Korean food item, Alaskans have finally participated in recognizing kimchi’s impact. Key Getty, Board Chair of the Korean Cultural Center Alaska, says Kimchi Day is typically celebrated on Nov.
22 for the 11 ingredients and 22 health benefits believed to be involved. This inaugural celebration came one day later than its traditional date; Getty said they wanted to ensure the best turnout. Hours of demonstrations by Tae Kwon Do performers, a local poet and dancer, acknowledgements by local dignitaries and obviously, homemade Korean foods featuring the main dish - kimchi. Getty said sharing the “coolness” of Korean culture is essential for the community, Korean or not. KCCA recently celebrated its five year anniversary since its founding in 2019. Getty said she believes the unity initiated by the seven founders who immigrated from Korea is bettering those around them.Attendees lined up around the lunchroom of Wendler Middle Scghool to fill their plates with japchae, kimchijeon, and see some Korean members of the organization preparing kimchi in front of them. KCCA expects to host more cultural events soon. Getty predicted a Korean calligraphy course and oriental embroidery lessons in the near future.
