Frustrated and helpless, Asil Elashy watched the Israel-Hamas war unfold. Then someone — her unknown “angel” — put her mother and brother on a list to leave.

From her North Side home, Asil Elashy could recognize neighborhoods in the televised destruction — piles of rubble that once were restaurants where she had eaten, malls where she had shopped. But the news reports from Gaza last fall couldn’t tell her about family members caught in the war zone. As weeks turned into months, there were only quick phone calls, bits of information about where they were and whether they had survived.

She’s also certain that “someone helped” — someone with leverage. In trying to secure their escape from Gaza, she had sent information and documents to people across the state and the nation, “to feel like I was doing everything I could.” Afterward, she called them all to thank them. No one took credit. “You just feel the love again,” Elashy said. “There are some good people on Earth, no matter what. I don’t care what ethnicity, religion, there are some good human beings.
