Artificial photosynthesis may be closer than you think. Scientists at the University of Basel have developed a molecule that can store four charges from light, speeding up the quest for carbon-neutral fuels.

In nature, plants rely on photosynthesis to capture solar energy, converting carbon dioxide into sugar molecules rich in energy. Animals and humans consume these carbohydrates, releasing the stored energy and returning carbon dioxide to the atmosphere, completing a cycle that underpins almost all life on Earth.Researchers hope to mimic this natural model in the lab. If sunlight can be harnessed to produce high-energy compounds such as hydrogen, methanol, or synthetic petrol, those fuels could be burned without adding extra carbon dioxide to the atmosphere, making them effectively carbon-neutral.A custom-built moleculeThe Basel team, led by Professor Oliver Wenger, has reported a molecule that could become an important step toward this goal. Built from five linked components, the molecule is designed with precision: two units release electrons and become positively charged, two others capture the electrons and become negatively charged, and a central unit absorbs sunlight to trigger the transfer.Storing four charges is more than just a technical feat—it addresses a central challenge in artificial photosynthesis. Many of the reactions needed to create solar fuels, such as splitting water into hydrogen and oxygen, require multiple electrons. Without a way to accumulate and stabilize several charges at once, those reactions cannot proceed efficiently.By using two flashes of light, the researchers managed to generate four charges step by step. The first flash produces one positive and one negative charge, which move to opposite ends of the molecule. A second flash repeats the process, leaving the structure with two positive and two negative charges.“This stepwise excitation makes it possible to use significantly dimmer light. As a result, we are already moving close to the intensity of sunlight,” explains doctoral student Mathis Brändlin.Earlier research required extremely strong laser light, far from the vision of practical artificial photosynthesis. “In addition, the charges in the molecule remain stable long enough to be used for further chemical reactions.”The ability to temporarily store multiple charges is critical for solar fuel production, as these charges can drive the chemical reactions needed to split water into hydrogen and oxygen or synthesize carbon-neutral fuels.A piece of the puzzleWenger emphasizes that while the molecule is not yet a functioning artificial photosynthesis system, it represents an essential building block. “We’ve shown how multiple charges can be stored efficiently with sunlight,” he said. “Understanding these electron transfers brings us closer to turning solar energy into storable, sustainable fuels.”The research also highlights how molecular design can bring artificial photosynthesis out of the realm of theory and closer to real-world applications. For a sustainable energy future, breakthroughs like this could help rewrite the way humanity produces and consumes fuel.The findings of the study have been published in the journal Nature Chemistry.
