'This is a worst nightmare type of situation'
WALTON , Ky. - Two deputies were shot multiple times while serving an arrest warrant at a Northern Kentucky apartment before the suspect turned the gun on himself, according to the Boone County Sheriff’s Office.
The deputies were serving a felony warrant for overdue child support to a man at an apartment off Towne Creek Drive when they were met with “heavy gunfire” just after 10 p.m. Thursday, said Major Phillip Ridgell.One deputy was shot in his chest and airlifted to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center, according to Major Ridgell.Both are in stable condition with positive prognoses, according to the sheriff’s office. Law enforcement from all over the Tri-State gathered at the hospital overnight in solidarity and to support their wounded colleagues and their families. Meanwhile, back at the apartment complex, the suspect barricaded himself inside an apartment after shooting the deputies, so a SWAT team was summoned, Major Ridgell said.Several SWAT officers and law enforcement agencies swarmed the complex and worked together to try to coax him out of the apartment. “The suspect did not cooperate with negotiators despite repeated attempts to establish a line of communication. After ensuring that all neighboring units were evacuated, the SWAT Team deployed gas canisters into the interior of the residence,” Major Ridgell said in a news release early Friday. “When it was determined that the suspect was not reacting to the gas deployment within a reasonable amount of time, a drone was authorized to enter the home. “The drone navigated through the home and discovered the suspect lying unresponsive in a second-floor bedroom. The SWAT Team safely entered the residence and confirmed that there were no other occupants or victims. After securing the home, a SWAT Team medic assessed the suspect and determined that he was deceased from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound."No one else was hurt, Major Ridgell confirmed.Part of their probe includes reviewing videos that the suspect may have posted on social media, Major Ridgell said.Officer-involved shooting prompted shelter-in-place at Case Western Reserve University
