Laura Nicholson, a young mother, was charged with two counts of injury to a child after her daughters, Kelsey and Kinsley, were found floating in a backyard pool in Katy, Texas. The girls, who were three and two years old, were exposed to cocaine, which was found in their blood during autopsies. The case remains under investigation, and it is unclear how the girls were exposed to cocaine.
Holding her daughter on her lap surrounded by pumpkins, Laura Nicholson was a picture-perfect young mom. In another sweet snap, her youngest child, Kelsey Kite, is in her father’s arms as her older sister, Kinsley , who was then two, blows out candles on her birthday cake.
But just a year later, both little girls – Kinsley, three, and Kelsey, two – were found floating in the pool at their grandmother’s house in the Houston suburb of Katy, in Texas, on February 11. Their deaths were initially thought to be a tragic accident until autopsy toxicology results found cocaine and its metabolite benzoylecgonine in their blood.
Last week, Nicholson, 23, was charged with two counts of injury to a child by Texas law enforcement, and arrested on Monday in Florida by a fugitive taskforce, which located her at a mental health facility near Fort Myers. Whether she was on the run from police or coincidentally in Florida is unclear, but a violent criminals apprehension team was dispatched to bring her in.
How the girls were exposed to cocaine is still a mystery, and Nicholson's indictment did not reveal any answers. Pathologist John Constanza, who did the autopsies, listed both drowning and cocaine toxicity as causes of death for Kinsley and Kelsey. He said cocaine could have caused the girls’ deaths on its own, but he ‘could not rule out or confirm death from drowning’.

The little girls are believed to have crept through a back door and fallen into the in-ground pool, Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said.
But the indictment did not explain how the girls fell into the water. At the time, Nicholson told police that the lock on the door had been broken for two days and the girls ‘are always getting out and running to the pool’. Under Texas law, homeowners with swimming pools are required to install a locked fence or gate around the perimeter, and this one was surrounded by a wooden picket fence.
Nicholson's father, David Nicholson, told police that his granddaughters were happily playing inside the house when he returned home from work about 8.30am. He played with the girls in the living room and helped them eat breakfast before going upstairs to bed about 9.30am. His wife, Catherine Nicholson, went grocery shopping at about the same time and told police that her daughter was sleeping on the couch when she left.
Catherine got home at about 11am to find the back door ajar. She saw Kinsley and Kelsey in the pool when she went outside.

David and others performed CPR on the children, but were not able to revive them.
When sheriff’s deputies arrived, they found paramedics attempting to save the girls, who were rushed to a nearby hospital by helicopter where they died. Nicholson appeared to have slept the entire time her mother was out and her father was sleeping, and the indictment did not mention anyone waking her. David told police his daughter was fit to be a mother, but that ‘she falls asleep a lot and this causes issues’.
When contacted by the Daily Mail at the junk removal business he runs with his son, Dylan, he refused to comment on the charges against his daughter. Nicholson lived at her parents’ house for about a year before her daughters died, after breaking up with their father, Corey Kite. Kite, who runs a small jewelry business, was last seen in Nicholson’s photos with his daughters at Kinsley's Disney-themed second birthday party in September 2024.
The couple were still together that June, when she wished him a happy Father’s Day, and he was present at Kelsey’s birth in January 2024.
‘I have no words other than I'm trying. Hard. I’m trying to take life day by day while mourning the loss of my two youngest daughters,’ Kite wrote online in the weeks after his daughters drowning.
‘I’m trying to grieve and heal at the same time. I’m trying to be grateful and accepting of the large support group that I have and I can’t thank everyone enough for all of the kind words, gifts, and donations to help alleviate some of this agony. ’ Kite did not respond to the Daily Mail’s questions about Nicholson’s arrest.
