In every person’s limited schedule, the last thing they would want to do is devote their time to something that ultimately wasn’t worth it, so defaulting to the anime they know for sure will be good is the easiest way to enjoy anime with as little risk as possible. Watching a bad or subpar anime almost always sets someone up for a bad time, but that isn’t always the case.
Whether it’s a bad show having a few strong points to make it worth watching or something that’s entertaining specifically because of how bad it is, some of the most fun a person can have with an anime will often come from the ones that end up being guilty pleasures of theirs. The kind of anime that fall into that category will be highly subjective, but speaking from personal experience, there are a few that perfectly fit the bill. One such anime is Nomad’s Kampfer, which stars Natsuru Senou, a young student who wakes up one day with magical abilities, including the power to take on a female form. Natsuru, as it turns out, has been chosen to become one of several Kampfers, female warriors with magical powers being forced to fight to the death, and as Natsuru gets further engrossed in the conflict, he ends up catching the eye of a multitude of women, including his school crush who’s only attracted to his female form. Kampfer is, by no measure, a good anime; it’s a by-the-numbers harem anime that quickly abandons any attempt at a serious plot and really only ever looks good when it needs to deliver on fanservice. However, Kampfer ends up being such a ridiculously dumb anime that its worst points make it fun to watch, and anyone looking for an anime like that won’t be disappointed. Another example is A-1 Pictures’ Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha ViVid, the fourth anime in the Nanoha franchise. The series takes place four years after Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha Strikers and stars Vivio Takamachi, Nanoha and Fate’s daughter who joins a league for close-combat-oriented mages as a means of becoming strong like her parents and getting closer to Einhart Stratos, a new face with a mysterious connection to her past. In addition to doubling down on the fanservice that became prevalent in Strikers, ViVid abandons the political and deconstructive elements of the franchise to become a more lighthearted martial arts romp, and the quality of the writing noticeably suffers for it. That being said, Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha ViVid is still fun to watch thanks to its fun characters and engaging fight scenes, and overall, it’s simply fun to have any sort of new content for an underrated franchise like Nanoha. Finally, there’s Liden Films’ Bastard!! Heavy Metal, Dark Fantasy, which takes place in a post-apocalyptic world where the villainous Dark Rebel Army is making plans to revive the demon Anthrasax and destroy the world. The series follows Dark Schneider, a powerful demon who is summoned by the forces of good to stop the Dark Rebel Army. Dark Schneider is a complex and morally ambiguous character, and the series explores his struggles with his own power and his place in the world. While Bastard!! might not be for everyone, it's a visually stunning and action-packed anime that is sure to entertain fans of dark fantasy
