Steven Tyler Faces Trial Over Decades-Old Sexual Assault Allegation

A small portion of a sexual assault case against Aerosmith's Steven Tyler will proceed to trial in Los Angeles, focusing on a single alleged incident from the 1970s. The case, brought by Julia Misley, has seen most claims dismissed, but the trial is set for August 2024.

A fraction of a sexual assault case against Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler is set to proceed to trial in Los Angeles County Superior Court, with a tentative start date in August.

The 78-year-old rock legend has consistently denied allegations that he groomed and sexually assaulted a 16-year-old girl, Julia Misley, during the 1970s. The judge dismissed nearly all claims related to their three-year relationship across multiple states, except for those tied to a single incident in California. The alleged 1974 encounter took place in a hot tub at a California hotel, according to court documents reviewed by the Daily Mail.

Tyler's attorney, David Long-Daniels, called the ruling a massive win, stating that 99.9% of the claims were dismissed with prejudice. The court determined that only one night from a three-year relationship, over 50 years ago, could remain part of the case. The trial is scheduled to begin on August 31, 2024.

Earlier, on April 28, a judge had dismissed a significant portion of the case due to Massachusetts' statute of limitations, as Tyler and Misley primarily resided there during their relationship. However, because their relationship extended into other states as Tyler toured with Aerosmith, a portion of the case remained viable under California's Child Victims Act.

Misley, who publicly identified herself as the accuser, initially filed the lawsuit in Southern California in 2022, just before the December 31 deadline to qualify under the Child Victims Act. The legislation temporarily lifted the statute of limitations for childhood sexual abuse cases. In her legal complaint, Misley accused Tyler of using his fame and influence as a rock star to exploit her sexually when she was a teenager.

She claimed that their relationship began at an Aerosmith concert in 1973 when she was 16 and he was around 25. Misley alleged that Tyler later obtained guardianship of her, allowing her to travel with him. She also claimed that she became pregnant by Tyler in 1975 and that he convinced her to have an abortion based on misleading information about the child's health. Following the abortion, Misley said she returned home, got married, and turned to religion.

Tyler's legal team has disputed Misley's account, arguing that her memory of the events is inaccurate. They maintain that the relationship was consensual and loving. In his 2011 memoir, Does the Noise in My Head Bother You? , Tyler wrote about nearly marrying a teenage girl, describing her as sexy and alluring.

He also mentioned that her parents had granted him custody to avoid legal issues when traveling out of state. Misley's attorney, Jeff Anderson, has praised her resilience and courage in pursuing the case. The trial will focus solely on the alleged incident in California, with both sides preparing to present their arguments in court
