ENTERPRISE, Ala. -A man released from prison before serving his full sentence for torching a Dothan restaurant and bar, blamed on the aftereffects of his military service, is accused of an elaborate theft scheme targeting a retailer in Enterprise as an investigation widens.
Court records show authorities charged 42-year-old Joshua Allen Garzarek on Monday with three counts of theft alleging that he stole about $5,700 in merchandise from Walmart over several months. He had previously been charged with another case involving a reported theft from the same Walmart store. Charging documents allege that Garzarek stole more than $3,600 in a single day.Multiple sources told WTVY that law enforcement officers searched Garzarek’s home on Monday after receiving tips from a group that monitors internet porn crimes. No porn charges were immediately filed as the investigation is ongoing, but court records show Garzarek, in addition to the theft charges, was charged Monday with being a violent felon in possession of a firearm.Legal woes are nothing new for Garzarek, a veteran of the Iraq war. His criminal history dates back years. In 2012, jurors convicted him of setting Poplar Head Bar and Grill, a downtown Dothan eatery and brewery, on fire, and a judge sentenced him to 15 years in an Alabama prison. In the same year, he received three years on obstruction of justice and possession of a controlled substance charges and received an additional three years. However, by 2015, Garzarek had been released from prison, records reveal, despite his 18-year sentence, long before he would have completed his term behind bars. By 2020 he was back in police custody, with officers charging him with stealing $4,000 worth of copper wiring from a telecommunications company, but prosecutors dropped the charge after they were apparently unable to obtain video evidence from Dothan police investigators who made the arrest. Some believe Garzarek’s bad behavior is to blame on the aftereffects of his military service, with several witnesses telling the judge who sentenced him for arson that he suffered mental issues after returning from Iraq.Download the WTVY News4 app to get alerts and stories the moment they are published.
