Painesville celebrated the reopening of Rider’s Inn, a Mentor Avenue building that first opened its doors in 1818.

PAINESVILLE, Ohio - Painesville celebrated the reopening of Rider’s Inn, a Mentor Avenue building that first opened its doors in 1818. Joseph Rider left Connecticut more than 200 years ago.

He followed a general to northeast Ohio and built the inn.

“My grandmother was Nellie Rider, one of the last generations of Rider who was born here... tracking back to my fifth generation descent of Joseph Rider, the founder,” Sawyer said. The inn served travelers on the Buffalo-Chicago trail as a stagecoach stop. Sawyer said more than 100 travelers would come by at times. Sawyer brought old family photos and documents to the reopening.

The pictures showed relatives who lived inside the building.

“There were a lot of rooms to play in... there were barns in back and a lot of other room than there is right now, so for young kids to run around, as the pictures show,” Sawyer said. Joseph Rider’s father fought in the Revolutionary War. The inn’s reopening coincides with America marking its 250th birthday.

“That’s special, especially now that there’s a reopening and a rejuvenation, especially at the 250th anniversary... Joseph Rider’s father actually was a Revolutionary War soldier, which kind of brings it all home,” Sawyer said.
