New York Rangers goaltender Jonathan Quick announced that Monday night’s regular-season finale against the Florida Panthers will be his final NHL game before retiring. “With the ups and downs the season, you don’t really want to admit it to yourself, you know?” Quick told reporters . “So as we kind of got towards the end of the season here, I let and know, just so they can plan accordingly. I’m grateful for them. They’ve helped me out through this process and let me know games I’m going to start so I can make sure to get the family there and stuff like that.”
The 40-year-old is arguably the greatest American goaltender in hockey history, becoming the first US-born netminder to win 400 games — a milestone he secured as a Ranger last February. Entering his final night in the crease, Quick holds a 410-306-90 career record, with the bulk of his wins and accolades coming with the Los Angeles Kings.
The Milford, CT native won 370 games across 16 seasons with the Kings, winning a pair of Stanley Cups in 2012 and 2014. He won the Conn Smythe Trophy as the playoff MVP during that first title run 14 years ago, going 16-4 with a 1.41 goals-against average and .946 save percentage.Quick also won a pair of William M. Jennings Trophies as the goalie with the lowest goals-against average in 2014 and 2018.
He was sent to the Columbus Blue Jackets at the 2023 NHL trade deadline, but was quickly flipped to the Vegas Golden Knights. He won five games in 10 appearances, then signed with the Rangers in free agency prior to the 2023-24 season. In 75 games with the Blueshirts, Quick was 35-29-6 with a .900 save percentage and a 2.94 goals-against average. He is 6-16-2 with an .893 save percentage and 3.09 goals-against average this season.
