An 18-year-old former Atlanta Braves minor league player is in custody after a fatal hit-and-run crash in Manatee County left a semi-truck driver dead.
A tragic incident unfolded on Interstate 75 in Manatee County , Florida, resulting in the untimely death of a 34-year-old truck driver, Stavan Albert Facey. The sequence of events began when a dark-colored 2022 Ford Mustang, allegedly driven by 18-year-old Jonathan Matos Morales , was observed weaving erratically through morning traffic. According to the Florida Highway Patrol , the Mustang moved from the left lane into the middle lane, striking a Chevy Trailblazer driven by a 63-year-old man.
The impact forced the Trailblazer into the path of a large semi-tractor-trailer operated by Facey. Unable to avoid the collision, the semi-truck lost control, careening across the southbound lanes before overturning and coming to a rest across the highway. Sadly, Facey, a dedicated father of four, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Trailblazer escaped with only minor injuries. In the aftermath of the collision, witnesses and law enforcement officials reported that Matos Morales briefly paused his vehicle before fleeing the scene, continuing his journey southward on I-75. The subsequent investigation led troopers to the Atlanta Braves organization. The professional baseball team discovered the damaged Mustang within their private compound and immediately contacted the authorities to cooperate with the ongoing inquiry. Matos Morales, who was part of the Braves minor league system, was subsequently taken into custody and booked into the Manatee County Jail. He now faces serious felony charges, including vehicular homicide and leaving the scene of a crash involving a fatality. The Atlanta Braves issued a formal statement acknowledging the situation, confirming that they are cooperating with law enforcement and expressing their deepest condolences to the grieving family of the deceased. Trooper Ken Watson of the Florida Highway Patrol emphasized that the tragedy was entirely preventable. He noted that the reckless lane-weaving behavior exhibited by the Mustang driver created an unavoidable chain reaction for the heavy-duty semi-truck, which cannot adjust speed or trajectory as quickly as a passenger vehicle. This incident serves as a grim reminder of the critical importance of road safety, patience, and predictable driving habits. As the investigation remains active, the loss of Stavan Albert Facey continues to weigh heavily on his family and the community. Authorities have used this high-profile case to urge all motorists to practice defensive driving, avoid aggressive maneuvers in high-traffic areas, and always remain at the scene of an accident to provide assistance and identification, as mandated by law. The legal proceedings against Matos Morales are expected to unfold in the coming weeks as prosecutors review the evidence provided by the highway patrol
