” The scrappy dive bar on West 44th Street has been open since the early 1970s when Times Square was known as a hub of vice and crime. Its supporters say they love the bar’s ragged charm and its community. Now the bar faces the prospect of eviction bySign Up At the rally, Glenn joined State Sen. Julia Salazar and Assembly Member Emily Gallagher and a crowd of “Jimmy’s faithfuls” in front of the Durst Organization headquarters — located at the end of the same block as Jimmy’s — to boost small business rent stabilization.would create a commercial rent control system in the city of New York operating through a commercial rent guidelines board like that for rent-stabilized apartments that would set rent increases each year. “That bill is going to protect the next Jimmy’s Corner, the next business that build themselves up. That puts themselves in a position to provide their family a better life,” Glenn said. Glenn took over the bar from his father Jimmy Glenn who died in 2020. In late 2023 the Durst Organization, which owns the building, decided to sell the building and attempted to cancel the bar’s lease through a provision that allowed for cancellation upon James’ death, according to a lawsuit that Glenn filed last year to stop the termination of the lease until its end in 2029. The commercial rent stabilization bill wouldn’t have a direct impact on the legal battle for Jimmy’s Corner, but Glenn said that he wanted to use the outpouring of community support that his bar has received to help other New York small businesses survive. Owners of businesses like the recently relocated Stuart’s Cinema of Greenpoint and Terraza 7 in Jackson Heights spoke about struggles that paralleled the rent fight that Jimmy’s is undergoing. Gallagher said that one component of her bill would be to establish guidelines over lease renewal for commercial tenants. “While we’re here rallying to save Jimmy’s this is about a problem that is bigger than a single bar,” Salazar said. “This is about the fact businesses are being squeezed out of our community across every borough.”A spokesperson for the Durst Organization said the building is for sale and is the ideal location for a new housing development. “After Jimmy Glenn’s death, Durst decided to sell the building and went above and beyond lease obligations due to the personal relationship with Jimmy,” the spokesperson said. “Adam Glenn, a Harvard educated lawyer, was told in November 2024 that the bar would have to vacate the building, and he was subsequently offered $250,000, even though such payment and courtesy advance notice were not a requirement of the lease.” Glenn acknowledged that even if he wins the lawsuit, Jimmy’s Corner may not be able to stay in its original location after the end of his lease in 2029, but maintained it was important to fight for the space as long as he can. “I am committed to the idea that there will always be a Jimmy’s,” he said. “I love this place. I love this community, and as much as Jimmy’s is a place it’s also a community.”welcome station repairs at Rockaway Park-Beach 116th StreetYankees 1-hit by Springs, Athletics in 1-0 lossMan gunned down near public housing complex on Upper West Side: cops
