GOSHEN , Ala. - Harvest is underway for many farmers as they collect the goods they’ve grown before the winter arrives. One father and son duo in Pike County want to show the importance of growing and harvesting an array of row crops.
Farming has been a Shaver family tradition for four generations, one that Jim Shaver passed to his son Hunter as soon as he was big enough to drive a tractor. “He started me plowing peanuts when I was twelve years old on a two-row shaker and a 30-20, and…we went from there. And we haven’t missed a beat since,” Hunter said. In that spirit, their Pike County operation grew widely over the years to include livestock as well as hundreds of acres of corn, cotton, small grains, and peanuts. This October, Jim and Hunter are breaking the silence along County Road 2201 as they are hard at work harvesting their vast collection of crops. Jim explained raising different products is not only good for the land but is also essential when working in such a volatile market. “Diversification is a necessity because what makes money or happens this year may not happen next year,” Jim said. “We’ve been used to five and six and seven, even seven-dollar bushel corn over the last four, five years, and this year we’re a little above four. You’re talking about a pretty drastic change.”“You’re an accountant, you’re a weatherman, you’re a parts man…it’s one thing after another. And at the end of the day, there’s not a whole lot of time left to sit in the tractor seat.”“It’s hard. Everybody’s not cut out to do what we do. The struggle is for real…but the struggle is worthwhile.”“Whether it’s bringing a new calf into this world, if a momma is having trouble, or just being able to help an animal, or getting to go sit in the tractor all day and listen to Rick & Bubba…There’s never a dull moment, I’ll say that much.
