Jhonatan Narvaez of Ecuador takes home the victory in the Tour Down Under cycling race, becoming the first Ecuadorian to win the prestigious event.
Jhonatan Narvaez of Ecuador clinched victory in the Tour Down Under cycling race on Sunday, successfully defending his overnight lead in the general classification. Australian sprint star Sam Welsford claimed the final stage win, marking his third stage victory throughout the tour. A crash approximately 1.4 kilometers (900 yards) from the finish line of the 90-kilometer (55 miles) sixth stage disrupted the peloton.
However, Narvaez skillfully navigated the incident, preserving his nine-second advantage over Spain's Javier Romo. This triumph secured the first World Tour stage race title for Narvaez, making him the first Ecuadorian rider to win the Tour Down Under in its 25th edition.Narvaez, who finished second in the previous year's race, entered the final stage with a comfortable nine-second lead, benefiting from the strong support of his UAE Team Emirates-XRG teammates. His transfer to the UAE Team during the winter proved to be a strategic move, as he began the year with impressive performances, seizing the race leader's jersey from Romo (Movistar) after winning Saturday's fifth stage in a thrilling climb up Willunga Hill. The Ecuadorian national champion consistently showcased his prowess throughout the six-stage race, securing podium finishes in three stages, marking a strong start to the first World Tour event of the season. Sam Welsford, set up for victory by his Bora Hansgrohe leadout man Danny van Poppel, crossed the finish line ahead of French sprinter Bryan Coquard (Cofidis), who had previously won stage four
