The iconic BBC series Monarch of the Glen is set for a highly anticipated reboot, this time with a female lead at the helm. The original show, which aired from 2000 to 2005, followed the journey of young restaurateur Archie MacDonald as he restored his family's estate in the Scottish Highlands .
The final two seasons shifted focus to new Laird Paul Bowman, who attempted to modernize the estate. Based loosely on Sir Compton Mackenzie's Highland Novels, the series captivated audiences with its blend of drama, humor, and stunning landscapes, spanning 64 episodes over six seasons. According to reports from The Sun, the reboot will be produced for Channel 5 and will feature an entirely new cast.
The new iteration will center around London lawyer Isla Campbell, who returns to her family's crumbling Highlands estate for her father's funeral. What was meant to be a brief visit turns into a life-changing challenge when she discovers she has inherited a million-pound debt and a bank threatening to seize the property. Forced to join forces with her brother, Isla must find a way to save the estate from financial ruin.
The original series, which starred Alastair MacKenzie and Dawn Steele as Archie MacDonald and Lexie McTavish, became a cultural phenomenon, blending family drama with the rugged beauty of the Scottish Highlands. The reboot promises to continue this legacy while introducing fresh perspectives and modern storytelling.
Writer Jeremy Brock, known for his work on Amazon Prime Video's A Very Royal Scandal, expressed his enthusiasm for the project, stating, 'When I was offered the chance to re-imagine Monarch of the Glen, I leapt at it. I'm hugely excited by the opportunity to tell a story of family life and finding your place in our hectic world—one that celebrates the warmth, humor, and eccentricities of a special community, with both optimism and authenticity.
Hope and joy are a currency in short supply right now, and the Highlands—one of the most magical places on Earth—felt like exactly the right home for them.
' Production is set to begin later this year in Scotland and Northern Ireland, with the original castle used in the series also serving as a filming location for Netflix's The Crown, where it stood in for Balmoral Estate. Last year, two of the original series' stars, Alastair MacKenzie and Dawn Steele, reunited to celebrate the show's 25th anniversary.
Sharing photos from their reunion on social media, Steele joked, 'Just like old times,' and added, 'I don’t think we’ve changed at all!
