- Gov. Kay Ivey announced Wednesday that the date has been set for the execution of inmate Jeffery Lee , who was convicted of two counts of capital murder in the 1998 killings of Jimmy Ellis and Elaine Thompson in Dallas County.
Alabama has set the execution date for death row inmate Jeffery Lee, who was convicted in a 1998 double murder in Orville, Alabama.Ivey said a 30-hour a time frame for the execution is scheduled to begin at midnight on Thursday, June 11, and will expire on Friday, June 12.
Lee was sentenced to death on Oct. 11, 2000 after he was found guilty of shooting Jimmy Ellis and Elaine Thompson during a robbery at a pawnshop in Orrville on Dec. 12, 1998., the jury recommended a sentence of life without parole by a vote of 7-5, but the judge overruled the recommendation, sentencing Lee to death.
The life in prison recommendation stemmed from Lee’s defense attorney, who contended during the trial that Lee was mentally challenged. The jury agreed with the argument. However, the Dallas County District Attorney, Ed Greene at the time, stated that the defense’s evidence of Lee’s mental ability was questionable. State experts also noted that Lee was mentally competent despite the defense’s arguments.
