ANCHORAGE, Alaska - The United States Air Force hosted its Cargo University, an accelerated three-day course on cargo deployment readiness training, on Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson in April.
The course focuses on teaching service members how to safely and effectively load cargo. Fitzgerald compares loading cargo to a game of Tetris. Service members need to consider the weight, measurements and center of balance when building and securing each load.
“Sometimes it’ll fit perfectly and be completely cubed out and perfectly square. Other times it’ll be a very, very interesting silhouette of cargo,” Fitzgerald said. The course starts in the classroom with logistics training. It then moves to hands-on work, where participants practice building pallets to mimic how they would appear when loaded onto an aircraft.
“They have been learning how to prep cargo in the sense of cargo buildup. So that involves building on a pallet and building up from there, learning center of balance, which is a lot of math there. They love that part, you know,” said Senior Airman Ty Deaton, U.S. Air Force.
“It is absolutely critical, 100% vital,” said 1st Lt. Brendan Plate, U.S. Air Force.
“It all boils down to this thing’s getting on the aircraft. It could be as simple as, ‘hey, this chain wasn’t done correctly. ’ It pops off. This forklift is now flying in the air on this aircraft, and now this aircraft’s going down.
