Toledo Police Chief Mike Troendle addressed the city council and community about the viral arrest of a 15-year-old girl over the weekend during a Thursday night public safety meeting that grew tense as questions mounted.

The meeting started calm and measured, but the atmosphere shifted as community members pressed for answers about the incident. Troendle said internal affairs is investigating the incident to determine whether the officer used the de-escalation tactics he was taught.

But the chief defended the patrolman involved. “These were very young officers that actually graduated from their academy in January of 2025. So they are very young officers that there is need for growing and experience and they will get better as time goes on, just like every other,” Troendle said. “We have to have order, please. We have to have order,” Council President John Hobbs III said as the crowd reacted to Troendle’s answer. Council member Nick Komives is calling for discipline and action to be taken, along with Council President Vanice Williams and other council members. Komives said other incidents involving the same officer have been brought to his attention since the arrest. “I have been reached out to by several people about his behavior in the community, including an incident that happened at LaGrange, at the LaGrange Street Library, where he was raising his voice, cussing and screaming at librarians that are there,” Komives said. About 20 people spoke during the meeting. The majority said they want police officers who will serve the community while having respect for everyone. “One million incidents resulted in use of force used by law enforcement. If you’re black, you’re two to four times more likely to have force used against you than if you’re white,” Maurice Morris of Toledo said. “He is supposed to be a professional. Higher standard. Higher standard in service work. You guys are supposed to protect and serve us,” Audrey Ramsey of Toledo added. Councilman Mac Driscoll said many communities are getting rid of jaywalking laws and decriminalizing them. He believes that is something worth looking into.Body found wrapped in blankets near Canton creek identified as 46-year-old woman
