After being hospitalized this week with complications from pregnancy, independent Texas journalist Priscilla Villarreal — known to her online followers as 'LaGordiLoca' — has delivered a baby boy. Villarreal updated her followers with a Saturday video post to Facebook .
Despite experiencing what her friends and loved ones called potentially 'catastrophic' complications, Villarreal gave birth to Jaxx Asher. He weighs 3 pounds, 10 ounces. The journalist, who has built a career on independently reporting news in South Texas and is currently in a legal battle with the Laredo Police Department over press freedom, explained her complications in a Monday Facebook post. ALSO READ: Booted out of her library home, Pepper the cat gets a happy ending Villarreal previously underwent a procedure to obtain a 'transabdominal cerclage,' in which doctors sewed her cervix shut to support the development and successful birth of her first child. However, that same procedure caused potentially life-threatening complications as doctors observed a potential tear in her uterus, along with a thinning uterine lining. The pain 'got to a point where I couldn't stand it anymore,' Villarreal said. 'I could walk ... maybe half a block, and the pain was so bad I needed to sit down.' A Gofundme organized by Claudia Baeza stated that Villarreal 'will likely be out of commission for about two months' after the delivery of baby Jaxx. The Gofundme requests assistance 'with bills, travel expenses, food, and other challenges that may arise after the birth.' The Gofundme's goal is $8,000.
