Starting Monday, April 20, access to Fort Wainwright will see some seasonal change as construction begins at the main entrance gates on Gaffney Road.

FAIRBANKS, Alaska - Starting Monday, April 20, access to Fort Wainwright will see some seasonal change as construction begins at the main entrance gates on Gaffney Road .for this project first came to public light in 2024, when a separate commercial vehicle entrance was announced.

Now the second half of those changes at the Gaffney Road entrance are slated to take shape this summer. “We’re going to be turning around and putting in lights set around our commercial entrance to turn around and light that properly and then we’re going to redo the lighting here on the approach and the exit of the gate,” said Jason Millett, the chief of physical security at Fort Wainwright.“Then we’re going to be redoing our lane shacks getting them compliant, and then finally a canopy to rest over that and provide the overhead protection and also a good symbol of welcome to Fort Wainwright,” Millett added. According to Millett, the structural canopy will provide benefits such as keeping snow and rain off the soldiers at the gates, reduce road maintenance cost and clarify where the entrance to Fort Wainwright is. “Combined with the signage that you can see coming in while you’re entering, there’s also going to be a big Fort Wainwright on top of it as well.” He said that the installation is still having issues with people accidently driving up to the gates not realizing they entered military property. As construction works begins in April, early stages of the project will focus on snow removal and site preparations. As those preparations begin and construction continues, traffic flow will be diverted to the commercial vehicle entrance accessed via the Steese Highway. That entrance will only be used for small personal vehicles during the project, however. “The Montgomery Gate or the old Badger Gate will receive all the commercial vehicles and then Trainor Gate will be operating out our regular current hours,” he explained. The main changes to the Gaffney Road Gate are expected to be complete by June 1. Once construction there is finished, there will also be three ID check shacks improving traffic flow. Currently there are two. Upon completion of the gate changes, “the commercial site gets shut down so we can get the lighting project started off,” Millett said. This construction is the last iteration of projects involving the main entrance to Fort Wainwright. There are plans for lighting improvements at other gates but those projects have yet to secure funding.Man accused of killing hog farmer, kidnapping and assaulting wife was released on bond days earlier Man accused of beating, breaking bones of a pair of 6-week-old babies due to lack of sleep, authorities say
