Inmates will receive two free phone calls and one free video visit a week by way of IC solutions. The change is an effort to curb the introduction of illegal drugs and contraband into the facility.
The correctional facility cited the adoption of this policy in several other Florida counties, such as Bay and Walton, with the same goal to keep facilities safe.
“The biggest problem is what they call paper dope now. It’s fentanyl and meth that is sprayed on a piece of paper. You can’t detect it until it’s heated up,” said Jammie Jeter, chief of corrections at Jackson County Correctional Facility.
“Takes a piece about the size of the end of your pen here, or eraser, and they’re good for hours. And when we get this information, it’s from the other inmates, about how it’s happening. ”“They’re very crafty in the way they’re doing things, and it’s really hard to combat,” Jeter said. The county commission approved the measure in a recent meeting.
The facility already has tablets for inmates to utilize to make the transition. Download the WTVY News4 app to get alerts and stories the moment they are published.
