Colombia Offers $1.4 Million Reward for Bombing Mastermind

Colombia has announced a record $1.4 million reward for information leading to the arrest of Iván Jacob Idrobo Arredondo ('Marlon'), accused of orchestrating a deadly motorway bombing that killed 21 people and injured many more. The attack has heightened security concerns ahead of the upcoming presidential election.

Colombia is offering an unprecedented reward of 1.4 million U.S. dollars for information leading to the capture of Iván Jacob Idrobo Arredondo, known as 'Marlon,' the alleged mastermind behind Saturday's devastating attack that claimed the lives of 21 people and injured numerous others.

Defense Minister Pedro Sanchez identified Marlon as responsible for the motorway bombing in the Cauca region, southwestern Colombia, alongside a series of other attacks in the vicinity. The explosion, which occurred on a heavily trafficked motorway, tragically resulted in the deaths of at least 15 women, leaving a scene of utter devastation with mangled vehicles scattered around a massive, 650-foot crater in the road.

Governor Octavio Guzmán described the bombing as the most brutal and ruthless assault on civilians in decades, highlighting the sheer scale of the tragedy. The government's response has been swift and resolute. Minister Sanchez, in a video statement from the attack site, condemned Marlon as a demented terrorist who targeted innocent people simply seeking to improve their lives. He pledged to do everything within their power to prevent such atrocities from happening again.

According to the head of the armed forces, Hugo López, the attack was meticulously planned, with perpetrators blocking traffic using a bus and another vehicle before detonating the bomb. President Gustavo Petro has labeled the attackers as terrorists and fascists, calling for the deployment of the nation's best soldiers to confront them.

This bombing was not an isolated incident; López revealed that it was one of 26 attacks targeting public infrastructure in the Valle del Cauca and Cauca regions within a mere two-day period. The escalating violence casts a long shadow over Colombia's upcoming presidential election on May 31, making security a paramount concern for voters. Marlon operates within an armed group led by Iván Mordisco, Colombia's most wanted criminal.

President Petro has characterized Mordisco as a drug trafficker masquerading as a revolutionary, heading the Central General Staff – a splinter group that emerged from the now-defunct Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC). While a 2016 peace accord led to the disarmament of approximately 7,000 FARC rebels, Mordisco, whose real name is Néstor Gregorio Vera Fernández, was among the roughly 2,000 who refused to relinquish their arms.

Saturday’s bombing represents one of the deadliest attacks in Colombia since the FARC bombed a Bogotá nightclub in 2003, killing 36 people, and echoes the 2019 National Liberation Army attack on a police academy campus that claimed 21 lives. Last August, Mordisco’s group was responsible for the deaths of at least 18 people in a combined drone and car bombing.

Recent reports suggest that the arrest of Mordisco’s brothers and the death of his girlfriend in a recent military operation may have fueled the recent surge in attacks. The upcoming election pits Iván Cepeda, the left-leaning candidate currently leading in polls who advocates for continued peace negotiations, against right-wing contenders who favor a more aggressive approach to combating armed groups.

The campaign has already been marred by violence, with conservative candidate Miguel Uribe Turbay being fatally shot while campaigning last year. The victims of Saturday’s attack were largely from a village near Cajibío, where a somber vigil was held, with mourners dressed in white as a symbol of peace, pleading for an end to the bloodshed
