Pope Leo XIV delivers a strong condemnation of gambling, denouncing it as a destructive force that ruins families. He calls on Italian officials to combat gambling and loneliness by promoting 'authentically human relationships.' The Pope stresses the importance of community and offers guidance on building a better society.

Pope Leo XIV on Monday delivered a strong denunciation of gambling, labeling it a destructive “scourge” that devastates families and demands immediate action. He addressed the National Association of Italian Local Authorities, urging Italian officials to cultivate “authentically human relationships ” as a key strategy to combat not only gambling but also the pervasive issue of loneliness.

The Pope emphasized the importance of fostering communities where people feel connected and supported, highlighting the critical role of local leaders in building these environments. He acknowledged the myriad challenges facing modern society, including the demographic crisis, the struggles of families and the youth, the loneliness experienced by the elderly, the silent suffering of the poor, environmental pollution, and social conflicts. These issues, he stated, demand a thoughtful and compassionate response from those in positions of authority.\In his address, Pope Leo emphasized that cities are not simply collections of buildings and infrastructure, but rather living entities with unique histories and valuable human connections that must be cherished. He reminded the mayors of their day-to-day responsibilities in serving as just and reliable administrators, striving to create a better future for their communities. Furthermore, Pope Leo expressed concern about the forms of marginalization, violence, and loneliness afflicting modern cities, urging a concerted effort to address these issues. He specifically singled out gambling as a major concern, citing its devastating impact on numerous families, and pointing to a sharp increase in gambling-related problems across Italy in recent years. He referenced the Italian Caritas Report on poverty and social exclusion, noting the serious implications of gambling on education, mental health, and social trust. He further expanded on his concerns, pointing to other factors contributing to loneliness and despair, including mental disorders, depression, cultural and spiritual poverty, and social abandonment. Pope Leo argued that these are all indicators of a deep need for hope and emphasized the importance of politicians actively building authentic human relationships within communities and promoting social peace.\Drawing on the wisdom of Don Primo Mazzolari, a 20th-century Italian Catholic priest, Pope Leo reminded the Italian mayors that Italy requires more than just physical infrastructure, such as sewers, houses, roads, aqueducts, and pavements. He stressed the vital importance of cultivating a shared “way of feeling, of living, a way of looking at each other, a way of becoming brothers and sisters” within their communities. He urged the leaders to embrace their responsibility to offer hope to their constituents, encouraging them to collaborate in planning for a brighter future grounded in integral human promotion. Pope Leo thanked the mayors for their dedication to public service and assured them of his prayers, encouraging them to effectively fulfill their duties with the support of their colleagues and the wider community. He concluded by imparting his Apostolic Blessing to the mayors and their families and extended his best wishes for the new year. This Monday's address marked the second time in recent weeks that Pope Leo has issued a forceful condemnation of gambling. In a November video message, he warned about the emergence of new addictions, driven by the increasing use of the internet, computers, and smart devices. He included compulsive gambling and betting, pornography, and the almost constant presence on social media platforms in his warning. He stated that these trends are often symptoms of inner distress and a decline in positive values, particularly among teenagers and young people. He noted that youth is a time of trials, questions, and the search for meaning. He then continued by saying the growth of drug use, pursuit of easy money through slot machines, and addiction to the internet, which includes harmful content, show that we live in a world without hope, where there is a lack of vigorous human and spiritual proposals. He called upon parents and educational institutions to inspire spiritual and moral values in younger generations
