Three elite Finnish divers have joined forces to assist with the search and recovery mission for the bodies of four Italian scuba divers who died in an accident in the Maldives, four days after the incident. The operation follows the tragic deaths of five Italian nationals, with a military diver passing away from decompression illness.
Three elite Finnish divers have joined forces to try to locate the bodies of four Italian scuba divers who died in an accident in the Maldives last week.
The team arrived on Sunday, just four days after the incident in the Vaavu Atoll, where the scuba team had been exploring caves at a depth of 165ft. The body of one of the Italian divers was recovered from inside the Thinwana Kandu cave, also known as Shark Cave, on Friday.
The Italian tour operator that managed the diving trip denied authorising or knowing about the deep dive that violated local limits, and mystery continues to surround the cause of death. Authorities have launched an investigation to understand what happened, while several theories are being considered. The deaths of five Italian nationals have claimed the life of Sergeant-major Mohamed Mahudhee, who died from decompression illness, prompting the MNDF to temporarily suspend the recovery effort.
The Maldivian military added that his bravery and sacrifice will be remembered. The Italian Foreign Minister, Antonio Tajani, confirmed that everything possible would be done to bring the victims home, while Divers Alert Network, a specialist diving organisation, is coordinating with the ministry to support recovery operations and repatriation
