Cleaning in the right order can make a big difference

you weren't aware you had. And by routine, I mean following the same room-cleaning order ever week. If you aren't like those of us who developed a system, then you may be wondering if there even is a "best" place to start.

After, we learned that there is such a thing! Turns out, there's one room of the house you should start cleaning first. This is the one our expert suggested. According Isabella Flores, a professional home cleaning expert, the kitchen is the room of the home you should always clean first.

"I've cleaned hundreds of homes, and the kitchen is the room where I see the biggest difference from cleaning it first in terms of practicality, hygiene, and psychologically," she says.and labor-intensive. She says, "There are more surfaces to clean in the kitchen than in any other room. Not to mention, there are more specialized cleaning issues such as grease, food residue, and appliance interiors, and it's the room where cross contamination matters most from a health standpoint.

"on your cleaning days? Flores says starting here can help build momentum that leads to other areas, which is another top reason she suggests this as a starting point.

"Cleaning the kitchen first takes away one source of ambient stress and gives you a tangible feeling of accomplishment right off the bat that will carry you through to completion of cleaning the rest of the house. Time and again I have seen this happen with clients. Once they get their kitchen clean, the whole house seems different, even before they touch another item.

", which can increase the satisfied feeling you get to cross this room off your checklist. If you're trying to tidy the house before guests arrive, cleaning this room can make your home feel fresher and more sanitary since these rooms are closely tied to hygiene. The living areas are next with your living room and bedrooms. Living rooms are more high-traffic areas than the bedroom, so it makes sense to do this room first.

Picking up strewn items, folding blankets, dusting coffee tables and end tables are all tasks to complete, followed by vacuuming if you have carpet. At this point, you should've hit all the main areas of concern and most high-traffic rooms.. You should always clean top to bottom, but save cleaning the floors for last. That way, any crumbs or loose particles that fall to the floor from dusting can be picked up last.

Now that you know what room to start with, here are a few mistakes to avoid so your cleaning process stays efficient:Always remember to start cleaning from top to bottom in every room so you don't have to go back later and redo some of your cleaning. Since every home is different, the order may not always be completely the same.

If you have extra rooms of your house that see a lot of daily foot traffic, like a mudroom or foyer, don't forget to prioritize those first over lesser-visited rooms like bedrooms or flex rooms. Just like there are mistakes to avoid, there are also a few tips to follow that can make your cleaning more productive and efficient as you work from room to room.

Flores says one of the things you can do to make cleaning easier is to have all the tools and cleaning products you'll need beforehand. That way, you won't have to stop in the middle of cleaning to go grab something you forget and it ruin your momentum.

Writing a checklist of the rooms and exact areas of each room you want to hit can help you remember what you want to target, and also help you feel more motivated as you cross things off. Not every week calls for a deep clean of your home. Sometimes it's okay to do a quick clean, which may mean not completing certain tasks.

However, if you plan on having company over, know the areas that are important to freshen up before your guests arrive.
