Intractable coughs can have severe impacts on daily life, even becoming life-threatening. A recent study by experts concluded that a significant number of intractable coughs may be caused by an undiagnosed bacterial infection of the lungs, similar to whooping cough.
It is, as ailments go, among the most innocuous sounding: a cough. Everywhere around, people have coughs in various forms and intensities, be it a mere clearing of the throat or a prolonged hacking fit.
Despite being quite common due to the common cold, COVID, or other factors, many coughs become intractable and last for months, making daily activities difficult, and at worst, life-threatening. The rise in deaths has recorded multiple infants dying from the same reason. An expert has concluded that a significant portion of intractable coughs might be triggered due to an undiagnosed bacterial infection in the lungs, which was not known to affect adults primarily.
The recent UK resurgence in whooping cough cases was largely responsible for this significant development. Left undiagnosed, the illness can lead to complications and worsening of symptoms. A prolonged cough could be caused by whooping cough, also known as pertussis. Whooping cough is a contagious disease caused by a bacterium, Bordetella pertussis.
Outbreaks of whooping cough have occurred since the time, with both adults and children being infected by the illness. Adults often have a lasting cough but no severe symptoms similar to asthma or allergies. The bacterium is spread via coughs and sneezes
