The Clubhouse, a popular café and bike shop in Putney, has been targeted by a series of audacious thefts, with criminals making off with over £50,000 worth of high-end bikes. The incidents range from nighttime break-ins to broad-daylight raids, with some stolen bikes traced to Bulgaria within hours. Owner Bradley Wright describes the escalating problem, which has left staff and customers shaken.
Nestled along a tranquil riverside path overlooking the River Thames, just moments away from the lively Putney High Street, lies The Clubhouse , a unique café that seamlessly blends the sale of premium Raptor Bikes with artisanal matcha and pastries.
Since its opening in May 2024, the establishment has become a beloved destination for both cyclists and celebrities, with tennis stars Emma Raducanu and Jack Draper among its notable patrons. However, in recent months, The Clubhouse has fallen prey to a troubling wave of thefts, with brazen criminals targeting its high-end inventory.
Owner Bradley Wright reveals that over £50,000 worth of bikes have been stolen from the shop since the start of the year, with nearly every incident captured on CCTV—yet not a single perpetrator has been apprehended. The thefts have escalated in both frequency and audacity, with thieves operating in broad daylight and under the cover of darkness.
In one particularly alarming incident, a woman was threatened with a knife after confronting two thieves who stole her bike right in front of her. Another break-in occurred at the end of November, where a masked intruder used an angle grinder to force open a window in the early hours of the morning, making off with two bikes worth over £10,000 each—bikes that were not insured.
Surveillance footage from November 30 shows the hooded thief, dressed entirely in black, entering through the window shortly after 2am, loading the bikes onto his shoulder, and riding away along the Thames toward Putney Bridge. Shockingly, expensive equipment like iPads and computers were left untouched.
Just weeks later, another criminal, this time wearing a grey beanie, was caught on camera casually sipping from a water fountain outside the café before disabling a CCTV camera and stealing another high-value bike the following day. The thefts are not limited to nighttime operations. In broad daylight, two individuals—one on an e-bike and the other on foot—were captured on CCTV snatching a bike while over ten customers looked on.
The thieves later allegedly threatened a brave customer who gave chase with a knife. In another shocking clip, criminals wearing cycling helmets stormed into the café and openly stole bikes from the shelves while staff could only watch helplessly from behind the bar. One particularly bold thief, masked with a balaclava, was filmed walking out of The Clubhouse carrying a nearly £10,000 bike with one hand.
Astonishingly, a tracking device on that bike was later detected in Bulgaria just eight hours after the theft. Mr. Wright notes that this is not an isolated incident, as similar tracking data has revealed bikes being transported to Bulgaria within hours of being stolen. These criminals are clearly well-organized, with some bikes being flown out of the country almost immediately.
The situation has become increasingly dire, with The Clubhouse facing a relentless wave of thefts that show no signs of abating
