Indiana Governor Mike Braun, alongside state officials and business leaders, announced a new initiative called IN AI on Tuesday, aimed at accelerating the adoption of artificial intelligence among Indiana businesses, with a particular focus on small enterprises.
The program emphasizes a human-centered approach to AI integration, ensuring that technological advancements align with workforce needs and business practicality. A dedicated website has already been launched, offering training modules and best practice guides for AI implementation.
Additionally, the state plans to host AI workshop roadshows this summer, supplemented by virtual training seminars, to further equip businesses with the necessary tools and knowledge. Governor Braun expressed optimism about the initiative, stating, We want to help workers and businesses unlock these advantages, and we’re doing it in a way that puts people first. This program will help businesses adopt AI in practical ways.
While the possibility of grants for AI adoption was mentioned, Braun noted that such funding would depend on the state’s financial situation and would likely be administered through the existing READI Program. Two local business leaders, Chad Harter, CEO of Jasper Group, and Joe Hyndman, owner of Hyndman Industrial Products, shared their experiences with AI adoption during the announcement.
Harter revealed that his company has been using AI to extract and log parts information for commercial furniture, saving employees up to five months of work. Hyndman, on the other hand, utilizes AI for market research and inventory management, emphasizing the importance of strategic planning before implementation. To my fellow owners in traditional industries, map the workflow first, build the solution around the business, and put it to work, Hyndman advised.
The announcement comes amid growing concerns about AI’s impact on employment. Recent high-profile layoffs at Meta and Microsoft, which cited automation through AI as a contributing factor, have raised questions about the technology’s broader effects on the job market. A Goldman Sachs analysis estimated that AI has increased unemployment by 0.1% over the past year, while a Tufts University study identified knowledge-based jobs such as writers, computer programmers, and statisticians as most vulnerable to AI-driven displacement.
In contrast, roles in construction, manufacturing, and healthcare face lower risks. Tufts’ analysis further projected that AI could eliminate approximately 61,000 jobs in the Indianapolis metropolitan area. Despite these concerns, Governor Braun and others drew parallels between AI adoption and the historical integration of computers in the 1980s and the internet in the 1990s.
A Yale University study from October 2023 found that while the job market is evolving slightly faster now than during those earlier technological shifts, the changes are not statistically significant. Indiana’s labor unions, however, remain cautious. Indiana AFL-CIO President Brett Voorhies urged a measured approach to AI adoption, emphasizing the need to minimize job losses and protect workers.
