Proponents of green burials say they are more personal than conventional funerals. Here's a look at the practice and why some are choosing this.
Diane Holick has long known she doesn’t want to be buried in a box after she dies. Nor does she want to be cremated. Instead, she wants what’s known as a natural burial, a type of funeral that eschews many of the familiar trappings of today’s burial practices. When Holick talked to her mother, Rose Marie Holick , about it, she also thought it was a good idea. “It’s funny because Mom was Catholic , so she initially wanted a standard burial,” said Holick, a retired independent contractor.
Then, after President Abraham Lincoln was assassinated just days after the war ended, his embalmed body was sent on a circuitous, 1,700-mile train tour from Washington, D.C., to Springfield, Ill. One million Americans viewed Lincoln’s corpse and millions more witnessed his passing train. “The trip was widely publicized, and people commented on how lifelike Lincoln’s corpse looked,” Bobbitt said. “They said it was like he was sleeping.
