Identity, Inc. announced on Tuesday that it would close its health clinic and cease operations in mid-May.
Identity, Inc. announced on Tuesday it would close its health clinic and cease operations in one month. Identity was founded in 1977 as the Alaskan Gay Community Center and later merged with Full Spectrum Health clinic in 2021.
Their main goal was to empower and advance healthcare for the LGBTQ+ community. Their services included LGBTQ+ affirming care, primary care, gender-affirming care , sexual health and behavioral health. In a press release, Identity cited three factors for the closure: month-long delays in Medicaid payments, the need to vacate their current building, and billing concerns for past services. “This decision was not made lightly. It comes with deep sadness, and with clear recognition of what Identity has meant to so many people over many years,” wrote Identity’s Executive Director Tom Pittman. Identity also points to what it calls an increasingly “inaccessible political environment.” This has created stress and strain among the clinic’s staff, according to the press release., the Alaska State Medical Board voted unanimously to start changing regulations for medical board licensees providing transgender healthcare to minors.Identity is urging patients to send a portal message for medication refills, referrals to other providers, or requests for medical records. The last day for in-person clinic appointments is Friday. The last day for telehealth appointments is May 1. The administration office will close on May 15. Anchorage Pride posted on social media saying they are heartbroken to learn Identity is closing its doors. “For nearly five decades, Identity has been a cornerstone of Alaska’s LGBTQ+ community—creating space, building connection and championing visibility when it mattered most,". “Identity didn’t just support Pride—they started it. What we now know as the Anchorage Pride Parade traces its roots back to their leadership, vision and courage. Because of them, generations of Alaskans have had a place to show up, be seen and celebrate who they are.” The press release announcing the closure also states an upcoming fundraiser to ensure patients and staff are supported during this transition. This includes a goal of raising $40,000 for the Health Equity Fund, plus an additional $20,000 to ensure staff are paid. “Identity’s story has always been a community story. That is what makes this moment so painful. This is not only the closure of an organization, but the loss of a long-standing piece of community infrastructure that so many people helped build and sustain. Identity worked because people came together to fight for one another. That remains true now,” Pittman stated.Post Malone spotting in Fairbanks has Alaska buzzingAlaska's Political Pipeline: A conversation with Senate Minority Leader Mike CronkSuspect, police dog both shot during midtown officer-involved shooting
