TSA agents at Cleveland Hopkins International Airport and nationwide have been working without pay for 36 days due to the partial government shutdown.
CLEVELAND, Ohio - TSA agents at Cleveland Hopkins International Airport and nationwide have been working without pay for 36 days due to the partial government shutdown . President Donald Trump says he will send in ICE agents to airports to supplement their work beginning Monday.
Sources at the airport tell 19 News that the plan to send Immigration and Customs Agents to airports to supplement the TSA has already sparked some panic. Greg, an air traveler from Akron, told 19 News, “We actually heard about it, and we got here quite a bit earlier than we needed to. We were very worried about it, so we just had to kill a little bit of time before we could get through the line.” Another traveler said they’re concerned about the proposal and feel they should just address the immediate need. “I can see where it would be intimidating for some people. I think the easiest answer is just to pay the TSA agents,” the traveler said.Because of the Democrat shutdown, President Trump is using every tool available to help American travelers who are facing hours-long lines at airports across the country -- especially during this Spring Break and holiday season that is very important to many American families. This pointless, reckless shutdown of our homeland security workforce has caused more than 400 TSA officers to quit and thousands to call out from work because they are not able to afford gas, childcare, food, or rent. While the Democrats continue to put the safety, dependability, and ease of our air travel at risk, President Trump is taking action to deploy hundreds of ICE officers, that are currently funded by Congress, to airports being adversely impacted. This will help bolster TSA efforts to keep our skies safe and minimize air travel disruptions. At Cleveland Hopkins, there is no shortage of air travelers with Spring Break and the upcoming Easter holiday. TSA lines appeared to be running smoothly with wait times on the busiest days of about 15 minutes or less, frequent flyers said. However, some travelers feel the issue surrounding the partial government shutdown has become too political when it impacts workers’ ability to feed their families. Traveler Kelly Wyatt, who was traveling from Cleveland back to Pueblo, Colorado, told 19 News, “It’s ridiculous because they can’t do anything. They’re just here to stir up trouble.”Hakeem Jeffries, a Democrat and Minority Leader for the House Representatives, told CBS News, “The last thing that the American people need are for untrained ICE agents to be deployed at airports all across the country, potentially to brutalize or, in some instances, kill them.”East Canton shuts down unlicensed day care facility after 8-month-old baby diesCleveland restaurant owner pleads guilty to misusing Covid funds, writing bad checks to employees Babysitter left child without food or water for up to 21 hours until parents came home, investigators say
