A major hurdle in scaling the hydrogen energy economy — the temperature limitations of filtration materials — have been overcome.

MIT engineers have created a new palladium filter membrane for hydrogen production .Silvery metal palladium is considered an essential material for a hydrogen energy economy. It works as a “gatekeeper” that lets only hydrogen through while blocking all other gases.

However, a major limitation is the metal’s temperature threshold: conventional palladium membranes break down over 800 kelvins.The new, heat-resilient palladium membrane has been designed to overcome the temperature limitations of current models. “With further work on scaling and validating performance under realistic industrial feeds, the design could represent a promising route toward practical membranes for high-temperature hydrogen production,” said Lohyun Kim, one of the study authors. New membrane design No other metal is said to be more effective than palladium for separating hydrogen from gas mixtures.This effectiveness stems from its unique process: palladium naturally attracts hydrogen molecules , causing them to break apart into individual atoms on its surface temporarily. These individual hydrogen atoms then diffuse through the metal and recombine on the other side as pure H2​.The MIT team solved this thermal stability issue not by changing the metal but by redesigning the structure.Instead of a continuous film, the new design consists of palladium deposited as “plugs” into the pores of a supporting material. The “snug-fitting plugs” remain stable and separate hydrogen even at high temperatures.This plug design prevents the palladium from shrinking or clumping at high heat—the degradation that limits conventional films. For testing, the team created chip-sized membranes using a silica support structure featuring roughly 0.5 microns wide pores, which were then filled with palladium.Plug design extends resilience by 200 KelvinsThe membrane samples were tested using a custom-built apparatus by flowing hydrogen-containing gas mixtures at various temperatures.Even after over 100 hours at temperatures of up to 1,000 kelvins, the membranes maintained their stability and hydrogen separation efficiency.This is a major increase in heat resilience compared to conventional film membranes.“The use of palladium film membranes are generally limited to below around 800 kelvins, at which point they degrade,” Kim said. “Our plug design therefore extends palladium’s effective heat resilience by roughly at least 200 kelvins and maintains integrity far longer under extreme conditions,” the author explained. The membrane’s ability to withstand high temperatures makes it highly applicable for key hydrogen-generating technologies, such as steam methane reforming and ammonia cracking.These high-temperature technologies are designed to generate hydrogen to produce zero-carbon fuel and electricity.“We showed that instead of making a film, if you make discretized nanostructures, you can get much more thermally stable membranes,” said Rohit Karnik, the Jameel Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at MIT“It provides a pathway for designing membranes for extreme temperatures, with the added possibility of using smaller amounts of expensive palladium, toward making hydrogen production more efficient and affordable. There is potential there,” Karnik added. Further development and long-term testing are still necessary to ensure the membrane’s reliability before it can be successfully adopted into working industrial reactors.The findings were published in the journal Advanced Functional Materials on October 1.
