Chinese researchers have reportedly developed a high-power microwave (HPM) weapon with power comparable to a nuclear explosion, raising concerns about its potential impact on military operations and global security.

This compact weapon, still in its developmental stages and confined to laboratory testing, holds immense potential to revolutionize anti-drone and anti-satellite military operations.
The weapon's capabilities extend to inflicting significant damage and even disabling electronic components, making it a valuable asset in modern warfare. The global landscape of military technology is witnessing a surge in the development of HPMs, with the United States reportedly planning to deploy some in the Indo-Pacific region soon. The U.S. is rumored to intend to utilize these weapons to neutralize Chinese satellites in the event of a conflict between the two superpowers. Typically, HPMs consist of a satellite-dish-like antenna with multiple rotation degrees to target adversaries at will. However, this innovative Chinese HPM deviates from the norm by employing phased array transmission technology.This technology, according to researchers involved in the project, allows for precise energy focusing, significantly enhancing its effective range and damage potential. Moreover, it enables simultaneous attacks on multiple targets. While phased array technology has long been considered impractical due to its inherent instability, Chinese researchers have successfully overcome these challenges. They have achieved a remarkable feat by generating microwaves approaching 1 gigawatt (GW) in power, utilizing rotating electromagnetic waves that can be stabilized into more reliable states. A unique power divider, about the size of a household pedestal fan, distributes the electromagnetic waves into eight independent channels for phased array antennas. This innovation allows the HPM to generate 80,000 volts per meter, comparable to the electromagnetic pulses produced by nuclear weapon detonations.Extensive testing has been conducted on this high-performance power divider, exceeding 5,000 iterations at full power with minimal to no “tail erosion” or lasting damage. After these rigorous tests, the HPM divider’s generated waveforms remain unchanged. The operating efficiency of this eight-way power divider reached an impressive 96.6 percent, and its power capacity threshold is believed to be far beyond 1 GW. This development aligns perfectly with the Chinese military's requirements for HPM phased array antennas with high power capacity and transmission efficiency. During testing, the weapon emitted Ku-band electromagnetic pulses, which happen to be the primary operating frequency band for communication satellites like Starlink. These satellites rely on large antennas to receive weak signals from the ground and utilize numerous commercial-grade electronic components.However, some Chinese space experts suggest that to reduce costs, certain components may not adhere to military standards for enhanced resilience against potential attacks. Given Starlink's prominent role in conflicts such as the Russia-Ukraine war, the Chinese military is actively pursuing the development of specialized anti-satellite weapons. Calculations by Chinese scientists indicate that gigawatt-level energy weapons possess the capability to target not only drones but also satellites in low-Earth orbit
