The U.K. is following a similar path, leaking government thinking on VPN restrictions or age verification requirements to gauge public reaction. This follows its own online safety laws earlier this year, mandating age verification to access adult content.
The problem is — just like porn bans — that this is a dangerous path that misunderstands how the global internet works and the curbing of personal freedoms that would be required to change that. And it’s going to be a disaster for everyone," EFF says of this "privacy nightmare.” Demanding websites “block VPN users from Wisconsin,” is "asking for something that's technically impossible. Websites have no way to tell if a VPN connection is coming from Milwaukee, Michigan, or Mumbai.” It’s that same misunderstanding that makes porn bans useless. “The technology just doesn’t work that way.” Pornhub reports U.K. users are down 77%, So what would happen? “Websites subject to this proposed law are left with this choice: either cease operation in Wisconsin, or blockVPN users.” And that means “one state’s terrible law is attempting to break VPN access for the entire internet, and the unintended consequences of this provision could far outweigh any theoretical benefit.” Watch this space. Governments around the world have now developed a taste for what EFF describes as “surveillance dressed up as safety.” Serious, organized crime and even terrorism didn’t convince public opinion that draconian measures are warranted. And so all these new rules are now tagged as online child safety. That’s harder to argue. “The answer to ‘how do we keep kids safe online’ isn’t ‘destroy everyone’s privacy’,” EFF says. And that’s the key point here. This hasn’t been thought through. Governments are pulling threads that would have been unthinkable in the past, such as banning VPNs in the U.S. or making U.K. iCloud users less secure than those in China or scanning every single message before it’s sent from a smartphone in Europe.There are no quick fixes unfortunately. But whatever the right solution might be, "it’s not ‘force people to hand over their IDs to access legal content’. And it’s certainly not ‘ban access to the tools that protect journalists, activists, and abuse survivors’.” Curbing individual privacy happens bit by bit.
