According to a recent poll conducted by the village of Kipnuk, 92% of its tribal members 18 and older want to relocate.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska - The Native Village of Kipnuk is seeing the majority of its tribal adult members push to relocate the village following the impact of“I heard that during some of those calls, there was a lot of trauma expressed and tears shed just talking about the village and the disaster and what they went through,” said Sheryl Musgrove, the Climate Justice Program director at the Alaska Institute for Justice.

Musgrove has been working with Kipnuk leaders to help it become resilient to climate change. Musgrove said the village’s current location is at sea level and at risk of flooding, even when there are no storms.Moving, however, is not as simple as a vote. According to Musgrove, the village will need to undergo a land exchange because it does not have any land within its village corporation suitable for relocation. The two sites up for consideration are on land that belongs to the Chefarnrmute Corporation or U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. “There would also have to be a determination that those places are safe for relocation, you know, looking at things like erosion, flood risk, permafrost law, but they are higher elevation,” Musgrove said.The state has already told the Native Village of Kipnuk that its program to respond to and recover from Halong “While we cannot relocate your communities through this disaster, FEMA and the state will do everything we can to do mitigation and resilience,” Bryan Fisher, director of the Alaska Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Management, previously said. “So that is repairing and rebuilding your boardwalks, probably on pilings, to elevate homes that we repair and rebuild, to be more resilient the next storms.”An Anchorage woman froze to death.
