Tax Day is Tuesday, but if you still need to file your taxes, the Internal Revenue Service has some last-minute tips to make the process less stressful. The IRS provides help for individual and business taxpayers to file on time or to get an automatic six-month extension to file, along with information on refund status, tax preparation help, answers to tax law questions, tax law research and more.
Here are answers to some basic questions. HONORING GEORGE: How to watch the George Foreman memorial service in downtown Houston Who must file an income tax return? Most citizens or permanent residents who work in the U.S. have to file a tax return. Generally, you need to file if you meet the income requirement. Single - $14,600 or more Head of household - $21,900 or more Married filing jointly - $29,200 or more if both spouses are under 65 or $30,750 or more if one spouse is under 65 Married filing separately - $5 or more Qualifying surviving spouse - $29,200 or more Additionally, you must file if you have over $400 in net earnings from self-employment, including side jobs or independent work. What documents do you need to file taxes? You will need some personal information to file your taxes including your Social Security number or individual tax ID number for you and anyone else on your return, bank account and routing numbers to get a refund by direct deposit or to pay taxes you owe, your adjusted gross income and exact refund amount from last year’s tax return if you filed, your name on record with the Social Security Administration, your current address and your self-selected PIN if you e-filed last year. You should also have Forms W-2, 1099, or other information. Employers and banks typically mail those out in January or February. What if you didn’t get a W-2? If you contacted your employer and still don't have your W-2, call the IRS at 800-829-1040. The IRS can contact your employer and request a missing W-2 by providing your name, address and phone number; Social Security or individual tax ID number; dates when you worked for the employer; and your employer's name, address and phone number. SAFE TO EAT?: Is it safe to eat fish caught in Buffalo Bayou? Here's what experts say. What if I miss the tax deadline? According to the IRS, taxpayers who miss the April tax filing and payment deadline should file as soon as they can. The IRS offers resources to help those who may be unable to pay their tax bill in full. Those who missed the filing deadline but owe taxes should file quickly to minimize penalties and interest. IRS officials warned taxpayers to remember that payments are still due by the April 15 deadline, even if they requested an extension of time to file a tax return. An extension to file is not an extension to pay. How do I get a tax extension? If you miss the April 15 deadline, you can get a six-month extension that pushes the file deadline to Oct. 15. There are three ways to get an extension, including paying what you owe online or using Free File, which lets qualified taxpayers prepare and file federal income tax returns online using guided tax preparation software and to request an extension. You can also ask for an extension by mail.
