Mayor Kimberly Trotter says crime isn’t a problem now, but growth makes these conversations necessary.
REHOBETH , Ala. - Rehobeth is one of the fastest-growing towns in Houston County , and leaders say that growth is sparking a big question: Does the town need its own police department?
Rehobeth is growing with suburban living and desirable public schools. Mayor Kimberly Trotter is getting input on how to deal with the welcome, yet challenging, growth.
“Overall priority was businesses, bringing commercial business into town. But one of the other things that was a concern was public safety,” Trotter said. Currently, the Houston County Sheriff’s Office provides law enforcement services to the town. Trotter says crime isn’t a problem now, but growth makes these conversations necessary.
“We hired our safety director, Todd Phillips, a few years ago, who was with the fire department in Dothan. And he kind of helped us model what we were going to do. So if you’re a firefighter for us, you also are going to be certified in EMS. You’re going to ride our ambulance,” Trotter said.
“So we have made significant investments into fire and rescue. ”“The Sheriff’s Department out here is very strong; the state trooper presence here is very strong. But in order for us to be able to fund that future piece of the puzzle, which is 100% of the police department, we will need those commercial businesses here first. You know, everything costs money.
Taxes and sales tax will help fund those pieces of the puzzle,” Trotter said.
“Small towns have to be really creative on how they fund certain things, and this will be no different. Just like it was with Fire and Rescue, our model may look different than most people’s, but I have no doubt that it’s going to happen,” Trotter said. Trotter says there is no formal timeline on the ideas, as this is just a vision for years down the road.
